Walk In Wardrobe Ideas

Wear The Proper Shoe When Walking Through The Heather by Tanya Clarke
There has been much debate about the origins of golf but it is hard to refute the fact that the modern game with the rules of today was born in Scotland nearly 400 years ago.
Much of Scotland is mountainous and in wonderfully simplistic language this area is known as The Highlands and just to complete this uncomplicated description the lower lands are called The Lowlands.
The theory is that shepherds discovered by reversing their crooks they were able to drive stones some distance. Doubtless they competed against one another to see who could hit the stone the furthest.
Within a short period of time it is not difficult to imagine the idea of a target had to be hit by these whacked stones and then the next development would be a hole to complete the game.
The highlands are the truncated remains of ancient mountain ranges that have eroded and weathered to something no Swiss or Austrian would call a high range although a Dutchman might still be impressed.
Most of this west Highland part of Scotland is covered in moss and fern as well as the emblem of Scotland; the thistle.
Walking the mountains frequently means walking through sponge like moss soaked in rainwater and the correct footwear is essential.
Centuries ago men wore a shoe they called brogues which were made of tough leather and included deliberately drilled small holes all over the uppers.
No socks were worn by the wearers of these shoes as the object was for water to leave the shoe as easily as it entered. This concept seems a little weird but there must have been some logic to it at the time.
Today that design is worn by city men and country dwellers alike but the modern brogues only have the small indentations in the leather and not the complete hole.
Those shepherds from centuries ago may have worn crude heavy shoes with holes in to let out the water but the highly paid professional golfer today has a slightly better pair of shoes for the modern day.
In fact, many professional golfers go to a famous old shoemaker and spend up to £5,000 on hand made golf shoes produced in the finest leather with natural hide uppers or alligator and even elephant skin.
These shoes are made to fit the individual and after the buyer’s feet are measured the shoes take up to half a year to complete.
Whilst the golf playing customer is having his feet measured, the cobbler actually asks the professional to take an imaginary swing with a driver and from the pressure points on the ground he makes unique adjustments to the finished golf shoe.
Those old Scottish walking shoes have come a long way since they were worn by lowly paid shepherds. These shoes are part of the wardrobe of wealthy and well-connected gentlemen in New York, London and Paris.
Just to complete the circle, it is likely that very many owners of the Brogue will also be the sort of men who can’t wait to get away from the office on a Friday evening in preparation of a round or two of golf over the weekend.
